I think Gary has a in the middle personality because he needed the dogs to help him but he also made it through his dogs dying running away or going to another owner and he manged to have a semi normal life even though he pretty much was raised by a babysitter or himself.All of my group members said middle.I don't think he will change i think he will be in the middle for the rest of the book.
